About: Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)

It is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up research career in Science.

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is an on-going National Program of Fellowship in Basic Sciences. Initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, KVPY is held every year to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up research career in Science.

Objective:

The objective of the program is to identify students with talent and aptitude for research; help them realize their academic potential; encourage them to take up research careers in Science and ensure the growth of the best scientific minds for research and development in the country.

The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and has set up a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation.

Eligibility Criteria:

Stream SA – Students studying in Class XI:

Students should have scored 75% (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in Class X Board examination.

Stream SX – Students studying in Class XII:

Students should have scored 75% (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in class X Board examination.

Students enrolled in 2nd year of Cambridge International Examination Board:

Students should have scored 75% (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in class X Board examination.

Stream SB – Students studying in 1st year of undergraduate program:

Students should have scored 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate in Math and Science subjects in class XII Board examination.

NOTE: The KVPY Fellowships are given to Indian Nationals to Study in India (Students pursuing/ intending to pursue under graduate program through Distance Education scheme/correspondence course of any university are not eligible).

Application Procedure

It is a 3-Step process to complete the application:

  • Register online by visiting its website.
  • Fill-up the Personal and Academic details, choose the Test Centre and upload your photo, Signature and other certificates as required & applicable.
  • Pay the application fee only at the KVPY application portal. This can be done either by using a credit card/ATM-Debit card/Net Banking or by downloading a e-challan from the application portal. No other means of payment are accepted.

The application fee for KVPY is as follows:

  • For General Category/OBC: Rs. 1000
  • For SC/ST/PWD: Rs. 500

Selection Procedure

KVPY is a Two-Step selection process – Stage 1 (Aptitude Test) & Stage 2 (Interview Round):

Aptitude Test: After the scrutiny of application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, all eligible students are called for Aptitude Test conducted both in Hindi and English at different centres across the country.

Interview: Based on the performance in the Aptitude Test, short-listed students are eligible to appear for an Interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

For awarding a fellowship, both aptitude test and interview marks are taken into consideration.

The merit list gives 75% weight age to Aptitude Test marks and 25% weight age to Interview marks in the streams SA, SX and SB.

Fellowships

Stream SA:

The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided on joining undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in science subjects in XII board. During the interim period, the students are invited to regional/ national science camp with expenses reimbursed.

Stream SX:

The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided on joining undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in science subjects in XII board.

Students studying in 2nd year of Cambridge International Examination Board:

The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided on joining undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in science subjects in XII board.

Stream SB:

The Fellowship to Selected Fellows is provided on joining undergraduate course in basic sciences upon securing minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) in 1st-year final exam.

Generous Fellowships and Contingency Grants :

are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre-Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.
