About -JEE-Main:
Every year millions of students compete for seats in prestigious engineering colleges such as Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and other government and private colleges. Admission to these colleges is obtained through the Joint Entrance Examination, known as JEE, which is a national level engineering entrance examination, which is usually done every year in April for admission to various engineering courses, held on the first or second Sunday. Performance in JEE is the main criterion to gain admission in NITs and other institutes, while it is a first stage examination for admission to IITs. Every year 12 to 15 lac students appear in the JEE Main exam.
JEE Main – Structure of Exam:
Till 2011, it was called AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Exam) and after that it was relaunched as JEE Main. The exam is conducted by CBSE, New Delhi. JEE Main consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II. Candidates can opt for either of the two papers. Paper I is for admission to B.E/B. Tech courses and are conducted in both online and offline modes. Paper II B .Arc & B. Planning is for admission to courses and is conducted in offline mode only.
JEE Main (Paper 1) consists of three sections in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics with 30 questions in each subject. The paper has a duration of 3 hrs and consists of 30 multiple choice questions with a single correct choice in each of the three subjects.
There is negative marking for each wrong answer, 4 marks are given for correct answer and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer.
JEE Advanced
About JEE Advanced:
JEE Advanced is one of the toughest competitive examinations in India, through which candidates are selected for admission to 23 IITs. JEE Advanced is operated by seven regional IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB), a policy making body for admission to IITs. JEE-Advanced was earlier known as IIT-JEE.
Selection for IITs is a two-stage process. In the first phase , students have to clear the JEE Main. Only top students in JEE Main appear for JEE Advanced. In the second phase, these top ranked students take JEE Advanced and only after that the final list of successful students is prepared.
The JEE Advanced is conducted approximately one and a half months after the JEE Main. JEE Main is the entrance examination for admission to engineering courses offered by NITs and some other institutes.
JEE Advanced Eligibility:
A candidate is required to pass JEE Main Paper-1 for eligibility for JEE Advanced. The candidates who want to take this exam must meet some of the criteria set by JAB which is below.
- Performance in JEE Main: after clear the JEE-Main.
- Age limit: The age limit for JEE Advanced for general or OBC-NCL category candidates states that interested candidates will be eligible to apply for the entrance examination if they are born on or after October 1, 1993. However, the age limit for SC, ST or PWD category candidates states that such candidates should be born on or after 1 October 1988.
- Number of attempts: The exam eligibility for JEE Advanced states that candidates will be able to apply for this Engineering Entrance Examination up to twice in their lifetime. Here, the candidates have to ensure that they appear for this entrance exam in consecutive years.
- Appearance in Class XII / Equivalent Examination: Candidates can appear for this Engineering Entrance Examination if they have appeared for their class 12th or equivalent examination. Here, candidates also need to ensure that this should be their first attempt in all the subjects which they have selected in class XII or equivalent.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern:
Eligible candidates have to appear for two examinations. These exams are called paper-1 and paper-2. JEE Advanced Paper-1 and Paper-2 consists of three different sections in which questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are asked.
Candidates are given negative marks for wrong answers to some questions in the exam.
